For Sale: a wonderful Ames “Triplex” Universal Machine Tool. Built in the United States by the Ames Company - well known for their high-precision machine tools - the “Triplex” can be used as milling machine, co-ordinate drill, horizontal borer and lathe. Very expensive when new - the price of a Chevy Roadster or three South Bend lathes - this example was originally owned by the British Tabulating Company (BTM) - makers of the mechanical “Bombes” used in the Colossus computer at Bletchley Park during WW2. Mounted on the maker’s cast-iron stand it’s in working order with both feed screws and nuts recently replaced. Single-phase motor with a stop /start reverse switch and a cover for the belt drive that is not shown in the pictures. It has a very recent Arrand ER32 collet holder, as show in the photos (cost around £150), a collet fitting milling cutter arbor and also included is an additional non-standard compound slide rest assembly that would need stripping and cleaning. Other accessories are shown in the photographs, these being self-explanatory. Phone: 01494-763793 office hours or evenings on 01494-433656.
