Hand-operated Shaper marked as a 'CHS' or 'GHS'. Compact but heavily built with an 8-inch ram stroke and table cross travel of 8".
These machines are uncommon; they had their place in engineering toolrooms and small workshops where quick one-off prototype work was carried out. As a bench tool they are well qualified for a model engineer’s workshop. Being manually operated , they do not bear the scars of heavy use and wear of industry .
This miniature machine (perhaps from the mid-70s?) is in fine condition having been professionally made, with attractive hand-scraped sliding surfaces which are well adjusted with no discernible slack. The initials G H S are raised in the base casting, although the maker is currently not identified. The overall size and space needed to operate the machine is 14 " high, 27" wide and 24" deep. The table is fixed to the base by clamping bolts in T slots and can be moved vertically through 3.5in. The workpiece is clamped horizontally by T-slots in the table.
Vertical range of 2.25" with depth of cut by a screw control which raises and lowers the whole tool assembly. The hinged clapper sub-assembly can be rotated +/- 15 deg on slots, without indexing, perhaps to give the tool a better bite or to reach into corners to remove rounding. However, the whole tool slide assembly (with tool depth control screw) can be rotated accurately (in 1 deg. divisions) with indexing to give +/- 90 deg. This would enable slots or teeth, for example, to be cut on the side faces of an already mounted work piece. The ram hand operating lever can be inserted in 4 possible ways and locked to the ram in a long slot to give many options for start of cut position, stroke lengths and operator’s comfort.
