An extraordinarily rare opportunity to acquire a museum-grade piece of engineering history. Based on the exceptionally low 3-digit serial number (No. 836), this machine was manufactured in Leipzig-Gohlis, Germany, during the very first years of Wilhelm von Pittler’s legendary workshop. Dubbed the "Swiss Army Knife" of lathes, the Universal was the world’s first true multi-function machine tool, highly prized by Victorian-era inventors and gentleman scientists.
Unlike most surviving models of this vintage, this 130+ year-old masterpiece is complete, fully operational, and in good working condition.
Key Features:
- Original Worm Drive: Remarkably retains its rare, original steel worm-wheel drive system in good condition.
- Complete Period Setup: Includes its original, and fully functioning cast-iron foot treadle and flywheel assembly.
- Trapezoidal Prism Bed: The unique bed design is undamaged, allowing the carriage to rotate smoothly for turning, milling, and gear cutting.
