Antique Barnes 4.5” x 24” backgeared and screwcutting lathe Model “4½” as made from around 1875. My great-grandfather emigrated to the US, where we think he acquired the lathe. He returned UK in the late 1800's, and we are fairly certain that he had the lathe shipped back home then. Hence, one family-owned from before the 1900s and everything associated with the lathe over the last 100+ years. Complete on the maker’s “Velocipede” stand with bicycle-style foot-treadle power. Also driven by the correct form of remote overhead countershaft and a single-phase motor with a Dewhurst reversing switch. Everything associated with the lathe over the last 90 years is included: a dividing head, three 3-jaw chucks, two independent 4-jaw chucks, tailstock-mounted indexing capstan attachment, T-slotted boring table, fixed steady, radial-slotted and plain faceplates, several sizes of hand T-rests for use with a large collection of hand engraving tools and chisels, clamp-type and push knurling tools, sets of thread chasers, a “cross-type” drive plate, set of screwcutting changewheels, several tailstock chucks and large cone centres, and other accessories. Also included is a 24-drawer cabinet packed with bar and flat stock in steel, brass, aluminium, clamps, screws, saw blades, nuts, bolts, and washers, etc. £475 or offers.
