Sometime in the late 1960's the manufacture of this mill was taken over by SEMCO with the model badged as SEMCO 0-DF This particular machine represents the final development of the original Milnes design and is badged SEMCO 1 DF- improvements include a higher top speed a longer table with larger travel and counter weighted down feed when in drill press mode.
This particular example is metric and was delivered new to Lancaster Technical College in 1969.
This machine is one of the finest small compact milling machines that money can buy. They are very compact yet heavily built with a massive sliding head similar in design to an early Cincinnati milling machine. It is unusual to get a 40 International spindle fitting in a smaller machine which means very good tooling supply. It has it has power driven down feed and manual power traverse with automatic knock off stops. The power down feed can be engaged with a clutch wheel and there is an automatic knock off facility to the rear of the head. Fine down feed by hand is available and the worm drive can be disconnected by a pull out dog clutch which has then allows the head- counterweighted by the overarm to be used as an extremely rigid drill press.
The whole machine is like a 2/3 or half scale version of a large USA the vertical milling machine and will not disappoint those seeking a powerful rigid compact mill for medium to heavy work.
It also has a clutch which is unusual in a small milling machine and a good range of feeds and speeds with an oil bath gearbox supplemented by a belt driven oil pump.
It has a coolant pump fed from a tank in the base. The machine is Three phase- but dies have a separate 2HP motor mounted on a swing plate in the base of the machine.
It will come with a machine vice and large and small Clarkson milling cutter chucks.
