SOLD: My need for a lathe is coming to an end and I have decided to part with my Murad Bormilathe and all the many useful bits and pieces I have accrued over many years. The history of the Bormilathe is most interesting and can be found here: https://www.lathes.co.uk/murad/page3.html
The Bormilathe has its original electric motor, a special "Bronson" unit (built in the Murad factory) made for the Bormilathe and originally featured a swinging bracket designed to keep the belt tension correct as the headstock was elevated. It has an integral gearbox with three ratios of 1:1, 1:2 and 1:3; with this type fitted, and in conjunction with belt changes and backgear, a total of twelve spindle speeds are available between 44 and 1750 r.p.m. With the motor set to the 1:1 ratio, spindle speeds are 132, 328, 700 and 1750 r.p.m.; at 2:1 the speeds are 66, 164, 350 and 875 r.p.m while, at 3:1, they change to 44, 109, 233 and 583 r.p.m. The expensive Bronson motor was also offered by the Murad Company for other small machine tools. Sir Vivian Fuchs's Trans-Antarctic Expedition used a Bormilate, and several were employed in the workshops of the UK Atomic Energy Authority and various universities. The Royal Navy also used them and confirmed that, during the 1960s, the frigate HMS Scarborough was so equipped.  Complete with a really good collection of ancillary equipment including a Myford milling slide with the correct vice, a set of changewheels two three-jaw chucks, a four-jaw chuck, T-slotted boring table, machine vices, faceplate,  a spare unused chuck backplate, three angle plates, clamping set, tailstock chucks and a proper Clarkson Autolock collet chuck. The sturdy lathe stand is included in the sale. Also included is a range of associated tooling (in a tool drawer), a surface plate (18”x 14”),  V-blocks, dials, and other gauges. Any questions? Please contact me. I have this advertised in a variety of places.
