All the major copying parts from a stripped-down Myford Nini-Kop lathe. The first two pictures show the before and after. All the parts were recovered from a previously working machine dating to the 1970s with unified threads. The hydraulic tank pump motor fan cooling and terminal block have sustained some (repairable) damage during storage. I haven't been able to check the 3-phase motor windings for continuity readings but the windings, when viewed from an access cover, do not smell or appear to have been overheated.

This compact and versatile assembly has 3.5" (90 mm) centre height and 17.5" (450 mm) between centres. Two very useful features are the excellent spread of speeds - 65 to 2800 r.p.m. - and the ease of changing them. There no belts to move, only two headstock-mounted levers and the 2-speed, 1-phase electric motor push buttons. The 4-speed vertical head is self-contained with its own motor and control from push buttons on the headstock.

Mounted on the maker's stand with the original and rather unusual "compound drive" from a new 1.1 kW single-phase motor with a starter switch. A restoration of the lathe has been undertaken and it's now in full working order. MYFORD SUPER 7B LATHE 3.5" x 19" (serial No. SK160527M) with a screwcutting gearbox, power cross feed and a spindle clutch. Mounted on the maker's cabinet stand with levelling blocks and a deep chip tray. Purchased by me direct from Myford, Nottingham in 1983 or 4. It was once stored unused for ten years between house moves and has been used only for light work on model engineering. I believe this was one of the last Super 7Bs to be sold by Myford and was built entirely ‘in-house’, i.e. with no dumbing down with imported castings.

Smart and Brown Mk.1 Model M backgeared, screwcutting precision toolroom lathe 4" x 18" with power cross feed and coolant - probably manufactured between 1946-47. The lathe is used frequently and is almost completely original even to the factory-fitted single-phase drive motor and switchgear (the leather drive belt if not the first fitted, is ancient). I've replaced the coolant pump with an alternative as the original was unserviceable. A note of caution: the lathe does not have any modern safety stops or cut-outs.
