Boxford BUD lathe 4.5" x16" Mk.2 with single-lever engagement of backgear. An all-metric machine on the maker's compact underdrive stand (just 45 inches long) on castors for ease of movement and fitted with power cross feed, a T-slotted cross slide, a new 1 h.p. single-phase motor, rewired (wiring diagram supplied) and all-new V-belts including the link belt to the spindle. Serial number DEM 8656/1/38 (probably 1977) and purchased 2010 direct from a school. It still has the maintenance sticker from Bowerhill (tel. 01225 705 321) dated "2/12/10, next service due – 8/12/11".

Meddings Type F14 Pillar Drill with backgear. The F.14 is the top-of-the-range version of this high-quality drill with a solid column and the articulated, swing head - the latter, combined with the rotating table, allows a great variety of work to be undertaken. The low-speed backgear to the head combined with the direct V-belt drive provides eight speeds from 80 to 1500 r.p.m. Rack and pinion rise to the 20" x 20" T-slotted table. An ex-university machine, little used from new and in superb condition and perfect working order. A high-quality machine vice is included.

Potter Precision plain-turning bench lathe 3.6" x 16" - probably catalogued as the "No.5". Carstens/Swiston Lathe and Ajax Mini Drill. The "Swiston" is a German-made machine around 4" x 20" with backgear and screwcutting. SIP SP-4 Jig borer / milling machine. When bought, this fine jig borer had been converted to a coordinate measuring machine but is now back to its original function using a Warco ZX-15 3 Morse spindle. No modifications were necessary to the borer save for the removal of the measuring probes holder  (which is supplied) and using the original bolt holes to carry the head on the cross beam saddle. The 19" x 27"  T-slotted table is unblemished, and a longitudinal travel of around 25“.

Boxford AUD Mk. 2 lathe Serial 16580 4.5" x 21" and manufactured 1964/5. 1-phase. Mounted on the maker's compact underdrive stand just 45” x 18” overall with a splashback. Bought November 2004 through this site, from an engineer in whose hobby was making clocks. I've used it for motorcycle restoration and workshop components. It was well equipped but I have added such as a rear tool post, a Bison chuck and steadies, etc. Metric dials, but an Imperial lead screw. Gearbox set for British threads with a metric transposing 100/127t changewheel included.

Syil X4 Plus CNC milling machine with Masso CNC controller and monitor. Bought new by me for light hobby use only in my heated workshop. The miller is fully functional and has proven to be very reliable - needing just one air strut for the Z axis in the years I've owned it. It is possible to control the machine using a PC and Mach3 rather than the Masso controller if preferred. This is a robust light industrial machine, a model that has acquired a good reputation in recent years.

Boxford STS 10.20 Geared-head all-metric Lathe with a screwcutting and feeds gearbox and power cross feed. Centre height 132 mm and admitting 500 mm between centres (5.2" x 20") with a spindle bore of 35 mm (1.375"). An ex-education machine running on an infinitely variable speed 1-phase to 3-phase inverter. The original spindle speed range was 40 to 2240 r.p.m. but the inverter expands this to higher and lower r.p.m. The lathe is in really good condition with no chips or gouges in the bed, nor any wear marks - although some staining is visible in the photos.

Cowells 90ME Precision Miniature Lathe. One owner from new and in perfect working order. Emco Emcomat 7 machining centre - an Emco 7 lathe complete with the 4-speed vertical milling head. This compact and versatile assembly has 3.5" (90 mm) centre height and 17.5" (450 mm) between centres. Two very useful features are the excellent spread of speeds - 65 to 2800 r.p.m. - and the ease of changing them. There no belts to move, only two headstock-mounted levers and the 2-speed, 1-phase electric motor push buttons. The 4-speed vertical head is self-contained with its own motor and control from push buttons on the headstock.

Myford VMC vertical milling machine. Single-phase electrics and fitted with a 2-axis DRO and a number of cutter holders and various items of tooling that surround the machine and shown in the photographs. Table 6" x 24" (150 x 620mm) with a longitudinal travel of 16.625" (422mm), across of 6" (150mm) and Vertically 12.375" (315mm). Colchester Student Mk. 2 Lathe 6.5 " x 24" still in its maker's paint finish. Hardened bed with a detachable gap piece and fitted with the safety apron with single-lever engagement of the sliding and surfacing feeds - the automatic throwout being adjustable by rotating the lever.

Portass Model S lathe 3" x 16" gap-bed, backgeared and screwcutting. Mounted on the maker's stand with the original and rather unusual "compound drive" from a new 1.1 kW single-phase motor with a starter switch. A restoration of the lathe has been undertaken and it's now in full working order. As an example of the work undertaken, one arm of the casting supporting the back gear shaft was damaged; a new arm was grafted on (aircraft standard) then line bored and new bearings installed. New headstock bearings, oil pots, drive belts, 1.1Kw electric motor and starter switch.

Hayes Diemaster precision vertical milling machine Type 21a Serial Number 161. Table 21" x 6.5" with a reground top.  No. 2 Morse spindle taper with speeds from 50-2400 r.p.m. run from the original three-phase motor and includes a high-quality Transwave one-phase to 3-phase 3.7KW converter. This is a very clean example of a robust, well-built and easy-to-use machine. All the sideways are good with smooth movements and pleasant to use. All spindle bearings and the drive gearbox are in good order.

A new watch/instrument maker's milling machine by John Stevens. Complete with drilling quill, horological 8mm spindle and ER collet spindle, machine vice and all the necessary tee bolts, allen keys, chuck key, spare drive belt, adjustable 24volt power supply and various other parts. There is a movable and flexible light system also included. The machine comes with a 5C collet indexable headstock that can be driven via a rear pulley to enable turning when mounted on the rear table. Standard 5c collets (not included) of up to 1” can be used for turning or gear cutting, etc.

Schaublin 102N - a late-model example and mounted on the correct maker's cabinet stand with storage. The bench top measures 150cm x 80cm and the height 85 cm. Overall bed length is one metre.

South Bend Heavy 10 Toolroom Lathe. 5-inch centre height, 21 inches between centres, a 1-3/8" spindle bore, a 1-inch collet capacity and driven by a variable-speed 1-phase to 3-phase inverter that extends the range of the standard 12 spindle speeds. This is the genuine Toolroom version, mounted on the maker's rigid cast-iron underdrive stand and fitted with a taper turning, a screwcutting gearbox, power cross feed and a full collet set on an integrated mounting board.

Duro Pillar Drill. A high-quality, American-made machine of especially sound construction. Fitted with a genuine Jacobs 1/2" capacity drill chuck and the original motor with a built-in switch.

John Stevens high-precision miniature lathe. 50 mm centre height and about 100 mm between centres. Myford ML7 lathe 3.5" x 20" gap bed, backgeared and screwcutting. Bought new by my father in 1952 (Serial No K24436) and has been well-maintained over the years and kept in c/heated rooms - the paint finish is the original. Mounted on a Myford cabinet stand Single-phase 1/3 hp motor with a reversing switch.

A special and immaculate Boxford Model C lathe 4.5" x 24" backgeared and screwcutting. This lathe has been restored, over 400 hours, to the highest standards by an ex-Dean-Smith & Grace machine tool fitter with the bed and slideways have all hand scraped back into perfect alignment. Comes with a 3-jaw chuck, the correct half-depth body 6-inch 4-jaw chuck, a set of screwcutting changewheels including an inch-to-metric 127/100t transposing gear, genuine Boxford 4-way toolpost, thread-dial indicator faceplate, and a catchplate. Elliott Progress 10-speed Drilling Machine Model 2G with a No.2 Morse taper spindle. Fitted with a slow-speed "backgear", the Progress No. 2G has ten speeds that span around 36 to 2750 r.p.m. so allowing a very wide variety of work to be undertaken. Sharp Universal Vertical and Horizontal Milling Machine. In perfect condition and full working order. Backgeared for gear-driven low speeds when horizontal milling and fitted with variable-speed drive using a 3-phase .55 kw motor controlled by a VFD (replacing the original .3KW single-phase motor which is included). This drive system has transformed the miller by making it bi-directional with speed controlled by just turning a knob. Table 16'' x 4.5'' with two T-slots able to be swung 25° in either direction from central.

Emco FB2 Vertical Milling Machine. A well-made, compact and versatile machine with a table 25" x 6", longitudinal travel of 15 inches, cross travel of 5.5" and 14.5" of vertical travel on the head. The quill travel is 1.6 inches and the spindle bored with a No.2 Morse taper. Single-phase motor with six spindle speeds from 120 to 2000 r.p.m. Complete with comprehensive equipment including four genuine Emco accessories: a rotary table, a collet chuck with a set of collets, a boring head and machine vice.

Boxford ME 10A 5" x 24" lathe with a full screwcutting and feeds gearbox, power cross feed, coolant and a spindle clutch (the only Boxford model ever to have the latter fitting).  This is a very late model and in exceptionally fine condition - having had just one owner from new in 1981 and - from the appearance of the original paint and slideway - very little used.

A fine example of Union L.I.A.S. backgeared and screwcutting 3.5" x 16" lathe. The lathe was purchased in the early 1960s and used by a qualified machinist in his spare time to produce parts for a model steam engine - when it regularly worked to tolerances of 0.0005". As well as turning, the lead screw was used to plane splines. One of the photographs below shows an example of this work. The lathe is driven by a belt from a motor mounted on a purpose-built bracket - this originally being fastened to the wall behind the lathe.

Lodge & Shipley Lathe circa 1905. Fitted with a full screwcutting and feeds gearbox of the Norton "Quick-change" type, long-T-slotted saddle wings to act as a boring table. For its age this is an exceptionally heavily-built lathe with a deep bed casting, a 8-inch centre height and in fair condition. Has a 3-jaw chuck, 4-way toolpost, a micrometer-adjustable carriage stop and very strong tailstock. Power drive to the carriage - however I do not know if this works. Fitted with a 230-volt, single-phase 1 .hp.

Boxford ME10 single-phase imperial lathe 5" x 22". This late-model ME10 has the same mechanical specification as the AUD with a screwcutting gearbox and power sliding and surfacing feeds. The motor, though, is mounted behind the headstock using a very compact arrangement that allows (if required) the lathe to be bench-mounted.

Toyo ML-1 Miniature Precision Lathe 2" centre height and 10" between centres. 590mm long, 260mm wide and 175mm high (23.5" x 10.25" x 7"). I bought this lathe in the early 80’s to use for prototypes in my precision turned-parts company where we ran cam-operated auto lathes. I'm the only person to have operated the Toyo and, after the company closed in 1998, I brought it home for my clock-repairing hobby. It has been used for fewer than 100 hours since new.

Colchester Bantam Lathe 5.75" x 20" metric specification and mounted on the maker's stand with a stainless steel backsplash with 2 shelves. The lathe is still in the maker's paint finish, in very good condition and everything works as it should - and is a pleasure to use.

Twin Milling machine - price reduced to a bargain £950 as time is not on my side. One owner from new and preserved in original condition and full working order with a single-phase motor and a " STARTET" push-on-push-off starter. Mounted on a fabricated stand, the miller uses a conventional cast-iron column with ways for the knee formed on its front surface. The knee is elevated by a front-mounted screw - in the manner of a Centec 2B - and carries a 20" x 6" table with two T-slots.
